Near-Infrared Device Claims to Bring Sunshine Indoors

A health-focused technology startup has announced plans to debut a near-infrared device designed to bring the benefits of natural sunlight indoors.

SunLED’s SunBooster attaches to computer monitors and laptops. SunLED claims that the device delivers a healthy dose of the essential part of sunlight that is absent in indoor light, and it does it while the user works.

A large number of people in industrialized countries worldwide spend the majority of their day indoors. The idea is that SunBooster will boost mental and physical health. The device will be unveiled early next year at the Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

According to SubLED, all indoor lighting lacks Near-Infrared light, which is part of the invisible section of the solar spectrum and makes up 50 percent of sunlight. On the other hand, the average person spends 90 percent of their waking hours indoors, deprived of that essential part of sunlight. This can lead to adverse health effects. Even sunlight that shines through a window cannot help with the growing global health issues caused by modern indoor lifestyles.

“We envision a world where everyone has access to the health benefits of natural sunlight — no matter where they are — indoors at work, at home, in a car, truck, train or plane,” says Dr. Anne Berends, CTO and co-founder of SunLED. “People worldwide don’t get enough sunlight, and it can have serious systemic health consequences. Our SunLED technology can be integrated into almost any product to improve the health of its users.”

SunLED Life Science researches and develops lighting solutions that bring the health benefits of sunlight indoors. According to the company, their patented and scientifically proven “Near-Infrared technology” promotes health and well-being and easily integrates into various devices like screens and luminaires, car dashboards and more. We envision a world where everyone can access the benefits of natural sunlight indoors. The privately held company was founded in 2024, and is headquartered in Amsterdam. ◊
